Go Natural: Luxurious Dandelion Tallow Sugar Scrub For Radiant Skin

In the spring, I collected dandelions, dried them, and made this dandelion-infused oil! Since then, it has been patiently waiting for me to use it in a soap, balm, or scrub recipe. Well, today is the day! This tallow-based sugar scrub combines gentle organic sugar exfoliation and smooth tallow moisturization with dandelion-infused oil and lavender essential oil.

This sugar scrub can be used on your body or is gentle enough for facial use.

What You’ll Need to Make Dandelion Tallow Sugar Scrub

  • Grass Fed Tallow
  • Organic Dandelion-Infused Olive Oil– I linked to the instructions on how to make an infused oil, this method takes a little bit longer and is more potent but I’ll give instructions on a quicker infusion below. You can infuse another liquid oil if you’d rather.
  • Organic, Raw Sugar– This is what I use because it’s what my local grocery store carries.
  • Organic Lavender Essential Oil
  • Containers for Storage– I love these containers with the cork tops & cute labels. These will make a great gift once they’re filled with sugar scrub!
  • Wooden Spatulas– This is optional but is great to have on hand so you don’t get wet hands in your sugar scrub

Benefits of Dandelion-Infused Oil

Dandelions have many uses and benefits! I can’t believe I went almost 30 years of my life without knowing them. I’m happy to say that each year I’m learning more and more about the world around me and the natural benefits of plants. I’m excited to be able to share what I’m learning with you and with my kids. Here are some of the benefits of dandelions:

  • Dandelions are high in vitamins A, C, and E which will help moisturize and nourish skin when used in soaps, salves, balms, and scrubs.
  • When used in a salve, dandelion-infused oil can help heal minor cuts & bruises because of its natural antifungal and antibacterial properties.
  • Dandelion-infused oil is a great skincare ingredient for all skin types because it contains vitamins, antioxidants, and fatty acids.
  • Dandelions have anti-inflammatory properties which help calm irritated or swollen skin.
  • Dandelion-infused olive oil can be used in cooking so you receive the anti-inflammatory benefits as well as gain access to vitamins and antioxidants through your food.

Benefits of Tallow-Based Sugar Scrubs

Tallow sugar scrub is a product you didn’t even know you needed! The combination of natural exfoliation with tallow’s moisturizing and soothing properties is perfect. With other exfoliators, your skin is often left feeling dry, sensitive, or even inflamed. Sugar is a gentle exfoliator. When mixed with tallow’s anti-inflammatory properties, they will work together to leave your skin feeling smooth, calm, and hydrated.

Tallow seals in moisture so using it as a sugar scrub is so beneficial. It gently scrubs away any dirt or dead skin while hydrating and sealing in the moisture from the water. Pat dry when you’re done and you’ll have a protective layer of tallow on your skin. Lastly, tallow sugar scrubs are easy to make and you can add your favorite essential oils to the mix. Make sure you use an essential oils calculator and a trusted recipe.

How to Make Dandelion Tallow Sugar Scrub

Melt and measure the tallow. I used a bowl and put the bowl in some water over the stove to melt it. I try to avoid the microwave when melting oils and butters to avoid the negative effects of it. Add dandelion-infused olive oil to the bowl and stir to fully combine. Put the bowl in the refrigerator so it will solidify quickly.

Using a hand mixer or stand mixer, start on low and whip the tallow balm. It will be difficult to mix at first. If you need to use a spoon to scrape the balm off the bottom and sides of the bowl before mixing. As it softens you can speed up the mixer. Slowly add the sugar and continue mixing. Scrape down the sides as needed.

Add the essential oil and mix until it is fully incorporated. Add sugar scrub to glass jars for storage. When you’re ready to use these remember a little goes a long way!

Choosing your Essential Oil

Essential oils can be very powerful in your skincare products. There are so many benefits in them, not to mention the amazing smells. I chose lavender for this dandelion tallow sugar scrub to stick with the flowery theme of the recipe. Lavender has natural anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties which can help calm skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis. It can also help reduce redness and soothe irritated skin. Skincare products with lavender are a great option for anyone with sensitive skin.

As always, when you’re adding essential oils to your products you need to use an essential oil calculator like this one. Essential oils are great and have many positive attributes but they can also be harmful if overused. Using an EO calculator will help you use safe amounts in your recipes. Storing your Dandelion Tallow Sugar Scrub

I love using glass jars to store my products because they are non-toxic and often just really pretty! Storing this sugar scrub is really easy because there’s no water added so it is shelf-stable and shouldn’t go bad. When using the sugar scrub you have to be careful not to get water in it because that will cause it to go bad. Use a spoon or wooden stick to dip the scrub out. A wooden spatula like this would work well and can be thrown away and replaced as needed.

I hope you enjoy this dandelion tallow sugar scrub as much as I do. Remember, a little goes a long way when you’re using it. Let me know in the comments if you’re going to try it and pin it later.
