Welcome to the Farm
Located in Alvin, Texas – for Local Pickup Only
TAMUK Composite Rabbits have become a popular meat rabbit for those living in the South. Bred to withstand the heat these rabbits with their long ears and short fur have proven to be amazing in the hot and arid environment that most rabbit breeds struggle with.
They were developed at Texas A&M University in Kingsville, TX by Dr. Steven D. Lukefahr, co-author of Rabbit Production.
Dr. Lukefahr started back around 1989 crossing different breeds and working to create a better rabbit for meat production to feed his own family. Seven breeds were crossed (in chronological order: New Zealand Red, Siamese Satin, Californian, New Zealand White, Dutch, Champagne d’Argent, Harlequin, and Havana) to create the Tamuk Composite breed we have all come to love.
Meet some of Our TAMUK Composite Rabbits
Tamuk Composites do extremely well living in the extreme heat that comes with living in South Texas and still tolerates the cold temperatures we endure from time to time. This last summer the temperatures reached 109º with the heat index reaching 124º. The temperatures were insane. Yet all of my rabbits had no issues.
The rabbits are amazing for meat production as well. They produce an average of 8-10 kits and can be bred on a 14-30 day breed-back schedule. That allows you to breed your rabbits 8-9 times a year. They are ready to process when they reach 5 lbs. This is typically around 8-10 weeks.
A huge plus with the TAMUK Composite Rabbits is their colors. They are so beautiful to have on our homestead. Some pairs can produce a variety of colors within one litter. This makes it so fun when it comes to raising your breeders.
As you can see in the colors in these two liters one has self-blue, magpie, and chocolate magpie in the mix.
The other consists of an ermine, harlequins, and magpies.
We have a specific Facebook Page dedicated to our Rabbits for photos and updates on our newest breeding stock.
