Brown Sugar is so Simple to Make – Try It and See!

Brown Sugar is a huge staple in my home. We are cookie lovers! haha, When I read all the crazy chemicals used in plastics I started to shift my family away from using anything that was wrapped or contained in plastic. I was so surprised by how much plastic we actually used I had never given it any thought.

After looking through my pantry and grocery list I started to make changes to what I purchased. If it came in plastic I looked for alternatives. Brown Sugar though, had no alternatives. It was like every company that sold it put it in a thin plastic bag. So I set out to learn how to make it. And I am so happy I did!

Everything you make is better when you do it yourself! And brown sugar is no exception to this rule. You have the choice to pick your favorite molasses and control the amount you want to add to each recipe.

And speaking of doing it yourself – this recipe is so stinking easy to make! I always make more than I need so I can have extra. But even if you only make it as you go it takes no time to put it together.

The first thing you will need to do is grab your ingredients and equipment to make the brown sugar.

You will need molasses, sugar, a bowl, a whisk, a measuring cup, a teaspoon, and a storage container if you think you will have extra.

The ratio for light brown sugar is one teaspoon of molasses to one cup of sugar. If you want dark brown sugar it is two teaspoons of molasses to one cup of sugar. Easy huh!?

Add your sugar into a bowl. You want the bowl large enough to have room to really work the sugar around without having to worry about it coming out over the sides.

To make things a little easier I start by simply stirring the sugar with a whisk to break up any clumps.

You will be doing some mixing by hand but this helps you know just focus on mixing the molasses in thoroughly and not worrying if any part was missed by hiding in a clump.

Now it is time for the fun part of mixing it all together. Don’t worry it is not as messy as you might think. The molasses covers the sugar and by the end, your hands are not covered in sticky stuff – just a little brown sugar.

Add in your molasses and start to work it into the sugar.

I find it easier to pour the molasses into the center of the bowl then work the sugar around the edges on top of it.

This helps absorb it just a bit and not have it sticking to my fingers.

Then I just stir and pinch the clumps in and it goes from a huge clump to smaller clumps, and eventually all into a beautiful lightly coated mix of brown sugar.

Isn’t it Purty!?

Once you have mixed it and there are no clumps left of the molasses you are done and it is ready to go straight into your recipe. You can take the leftovers and store them in an air-tight container on a shelf or in a cabinet. If you don’t have containers check out the weck jars I love and use! You can also use mason jars as simple storage.

One last thing I would like to add. Making food like this not only tastes amazing, but it actually costs less. I don’t know about you but I love saving money! A lot of food costs go towards the extra processing. When we make it at home we cut out the middle man AND make it healthier. It is a win-win!
