Benefits of Tallow in Soaps and Skincare
If you’re like me, you were a little weirded out when you first learned about Tallow in Soaps or maybe even tallow in general. You want me to put what on my hands and face? 😆 When I started learning about all its benefits, I quickly got used to the idea and started really appreciating the knowledge.
If you don’t know, tallow is rendered and purified beef fat. Yup, you read that right! When you render beef fat (specifically suet, found around the kidneys), you rid it of impurities and water, leaving a nutrient-dense oil that will nourish your skin whether it is mixed with lye and made into soap, used as a moisturizer, or used in cooking. Read more about why we need lye to make soap in this post.
Tallow works with our skin on a cellular level to moisturize without clogging our pores. Because tallow is so similar to the oils naturally produced by our skin, it can deeply penetrate and hydrate our skin like other oils can’t. Tallow is nourishing and rejuvenating and it shields our skin from harsh environmental factors.
Benefits of Tallow in Soaps
Vitamins A, D, and K are all found in tallow along with antioxidants like vitamin E. These aid in keeping a youthful appearance to your skin. These nutrients help prevent the breakdown of collagen and help fight off free radicals that cause wrinkles.
Tallow is also filled with oleic acid which is great for conditioning the skin. It helps the skin regenerate and helps reduce inflammation. Your skin will feel soft and smooth after you use it.
How do I use it?
Tallow soaps and moisturizers are gentle yet powerful enough that you can use them on all skin types, I even use them on my baby’s skin! These moisturizers can be used to help with dry skin as well. A little goes a long way with a balm, and you won’t have to reapply all day. Tallow has been used in products much before any synthetic products became available and it is time we all went back to what is natural for our soaps and skincare. If you need more of a push to switch to natural products, check out my post about why I made these changes here.
What Else?
Not only is tallow the perfect pair for your skin, you can eat it too! Well, I probably wouldn’t just go eating spoonfuls of it but you can cook with it for sure. We use it to cook eggs in a cast iron skillet every morning. Using pure and natural oil in your cooking is much better than processed vegetable oils!
Now that you’ve got a general overview of tallow, I hope you’ll consider adding it to your daily routines in skincare and cooking! Don’t forget to stop by our shop and see what tallow soaps we have available right now.
